Read Graceling and Fire by Kristine Cashore
Fantasy. A bit like medieval Europe (kings, horses, arrows) with some people having high ranking skills in things like fighting, weather prediction, or "holding their breath for a really long time." Fire also has a vast array of rainbow-colored creatures with mind control. Both books feature well done romances and strong female leading characters who end up saving everyone. Very enjoyable. Well written: not too light or heavy for a YA book.
